Severe Respiratory Illness in Mexico

The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) has been alerted to clusters of severe respiratory illnesses in some cities in Mexico. While Mexico has been able to confirm that some of this illness was caused by influenza A and B, they have requested help from Canada to conduct further laboratory testing.

On Wednesday, April 22, Mexican authorities held a news release to share more information about the situation. Since March 18,2009, there are a total of 137 cases of severe respiratory illness (SRI) and 20 deaths.

News Release: Government of Canada Provides Update on Prevention Measures Being Taken Regarding Swine Flu

(OTTAWA) Minister of Health Leona Aglukkaq and Chief Public Health Officer Dr. David Butler-Jones today provided an update to Canadians on further actions that have been taken by the Government of Canada in the management of the swine flu outbreak. The federal government continues to work closely with the provinces and territories and international partners to protect the health and safety of Canadians.

Travel Health Warning Issued for Mexico

As of April 27 2009, travellers from Canada are recommended to postpone elective or non-essential travel to Mexico until further notice.

Human Swine Flu in California

The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) has learned of two cases of human swine flu in California. No cases or clusters of human swine flu have been reported in Canada.
